Era Istrefi was born on 4 July 1994, in the state of Pristina. Her nationality is Albanian. She is the daughter of Kosovar singer Suzana Tahirsylaj and Nezir Istrefi, a journalist. Her mother was a prominent figure in the entertainment business back in the 90s. After the death of Era’s father in 2004, her mother left behind the music industry. Era’s sister is also a singer.
She made her debut with her song “ Mani Per Money” in 2013. She then released new materials sung by her in Gheg Albanian, which featured a lot of English language phrases.
Era’s third single “E Dehun” assured the singer three Videofest Awards with one being for “Best New Artist”
In December 2014, she released her pop ballad “13”. The music was produced in the United States along with its video. The video was able to bag almost 200,000 views on Youtube within 24 hours of its release. The video was featured later on V Magazine.
She gained international stardom after the release of her hit single “BonBon”. The music was released on 31 December 2015, along with a video. The video was shot in Kosovo. The song turned out to be an immediate success, becoming viral on social media. Her songs have been well received by her fans all over the world. She was also supported by the very beautiful and talented American actress Chloe Grace Martez. Various publications also referred to her as the “Rihanna and Sia of Kosovo”
In February 2016, she signed a deal with American labels Sony Music Entertainment and Ultra Music.
Istrefi released her hot new single “Redrum” on 24 February 2017. It was produced by Felix Snow. Few months after the release, she released another new single titled “ No I Love Yous”. This song also features artist French Montana.
On May 21, 2018, it was officially announced that the young emerging artist had joined forces with Will Smith and Nicky Jam to release the Official FIFA World Cup Song. The song was released on 25th May.
Istrefi was dragged into a controversy for the video shoot of her third single “E Dehun”. The video depicts a woman dancing semi-naked around the premises of the abandoned Church of Christ the Saviour, Pristina. The Serbian Orthodox Church called the actions of the artist to be “demonic” and “blasphemous” in nature. The accusations were thwarted by the video’s director Astrit Ismaili stating that the video had no intentions of hurting the sentiments of the Serbian people and that he had received all the legal permissions to shoot the video.
