Emily born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, later the Erwin family moved to Addison, Texas on the edge of Dallas, there she raised along with her sisters, Burns parents new her interests towards music, and trained her with various musical instruments from her elementary school.

Burns started playing the violin at the age of seven and banjo at ten. With her age, her interest towards music grown up too and started learning different instruments. Like Burns, her sister,  Martha also loves music from bottom of her heart.

Emily became a master on playing the banjo, she got the talent on her own, after following some books and by learning chords progressions. From 1984 to 1989, Burns worked with the director of Patsy Montana Museum and Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, Jane Frost along with Troy and Sharon Gilchrist.

The witty Emily started her career in the music industry in 1989, when she joined her sister Martha, guitarist Robin Lynn Macy, and upright bass player Laura Lynch. The band evolved into a new direction; when Marcy left the group and moved on to find a purer bluegrass sound, in 1993.

She has been involved with Dixie Chicks until 2003 and visited several places to perform live, with her sister Martha, until the end of the Dixie Chicks ‘successful careers in music.

During her tour, Emily married to country singer, Charlie Robison. The couple married at the Cibolo Creek Ranch. The couple gave birth to three children, after nine years of long relation Emily and Charlie divorced.

She is currently married to Martin Strayer and has a daughter, Violet Isabel Strayer. Her current, estimated net worth is $50 million.
