Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Elizabeth Smart, an American child safety activist, is a married woman. Smart decision to become a safety activist was more of an inspiration as a teenager when she was anonymously kidnapped. 

Well, also the contributor for ABC News, Elizabeth married her boyfriend-turned-husband Matthew Gilmour, following 9 years of her abduction. Smart together with her husband shares 3 children and enjoys a blissful relationship. Let's get the details of Elizabeth's married life, husband, children, and her kidnapping incident.

Elizabeth Smart's Married Life: Her Husband & Children

The founder of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, Smart is the mother of 3 children with her beloved husband Matthew Gilmour, a native of Scotland.

Talking about their courtship, Elizabeth met Gilmour in Paris in 2009 when she served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

At first, the two were friends and served Mormons for 2 years in France. The platonic friendship gradually turned to "best-friends" and eventually to a romantic relationship.

Well, after dating for a year, in January 2012, Matthew proposed Smart with a sapphire ring, and thus became engaged.

Then, just a month later, on February 18, 2012, Elizabeth and Matthew got married.

Well, the wedding ceremony was held on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii- the same place where Elizabeth went after her recovery from captivity.

For a fact, the couple originally planned Salt Lake as their wedding venue but later changed location what they say has a special resonance for Smart.

Well, in 2012, Gilmour stated that Elizabeth's confidence made him fall for her,

I got to know her as she truly is. The thing that attracted me the most to her at the beginning and now is, how confident she is, especially considering everything she has been through.

Elizabeth does state she dated a few boyfriends while in her high school, however, none of those affairs ever made highlights. On the contrary, Gilmour is officially free from failed relationships.

The couple living as husband and wife for over 6 years enjoys sound married life. No rumors of their divorce ever made a point.

Smart and Gilmour's Children

With her husband Matthew Gilmour, Elizabeth, 31, is the mother of 3 children: 2 daughters and a son.

The duo first welcomed their daughter Chloe Gilmour in February 2015 which followed the birth of their second child, son James Gilmour, on April 2, 2017.

In the late June 2018, Smart announced her pregnancy via her social media featuring her baby-bump.

Then in November 2018, Elizabeth and Matthew welcomed their third child, daughter Olivia. The news became confirmed after Smart shared an Instagram post of her adorable new-born baby.

Elizabeth Smart's Family

Smart was born to father Edward "Ed" Smart and mother Lois Smart as their second child. She has a sister named Mary Katherine Smart and 4 brothers: Andrew Smart, William Smart, Charles Smart, and Ed Smart.

Her family was a part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The Bryant Middle School and East High School attendant, Smart graduated in Bachelor of Music in harp from the Brigham Young University.

Elizabeth Smart's Kidnapping: Details and Aftermaths

At the age of 14, Smart became a headline for news after she was kidnapped on June 5, 2002. The criminal Brian David Mitchell abducted Elizabeth at knifepoint from her bedroom which she shared with her younger sister, Mary Katherine.

At that time, Mary reportedly was awake but pretended to sleep. Following the abduction, the abductor took Smart to Federal Heights.

For almost 9 months, Elizabeth was held captive by David and his wife Wanda Barzee and was sexually abused. Later on March 12, 2003, the police found out Smart in Sandy, Utah, approximately 18 miles (29 km) from her home.

Later, both of the abductors were arrested and sentenced life in prison in 2011.

Aftermaths

Following Elizabeth Smart's release from kidnapping, she struggled to over the trauma. Soon after the recovery, as a consequence, Smart founded The Elizabeth Smart Foundation and began working as an activist for child safety.

Besides this, Smart became the subject of many books and TV. 

Her uncle Tom Smart and author Lee Benson wrote a book about the search for Smart, In Plain Sight: The Startling Truth Behind the Elizabeth Smart Investigation.

Then, Elizabeth's father wrote about her kidnapping Bringing Elizabeth Home which became the base for the TV film I Am Elizabeth Smart.

The movie featured actors/actresses Alana BodenSkeet Ulrich, and Deirdre Lovejoy.

As for now, she is enjoying her marriage with her husband and children to the fullest.
