In 1987, Elias got married to love of his life Jennifer Rubin. Jennifer Rubin is an actress and producer. She is also a former model and is known for being the Ford International Model of the Year in 1984. They got divorced in 1990.
After his high school graduation, Elias joined Vanier College. He studied there for about two years and then he got enrolled at American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He finally earned a degree from there in 1983. As he was interested in acting, he joined Academy's 1983–84 Production Company as one of its member. He also studied acting under the guidance of Ellen Burstyn and Peter Masterson. During the early 1980s, he starred the role of Father Rangier in the school's production of The Devils. He also played the role of Paris in the musical The Golden Apple. In 1985, he appeared in a television film Private Sessions.
