After his high school graduation, Elias joined Vanier College. He studied there for about two years and then he got enrolled at American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He finally earned a degree from there in 1983. As he was interested in acting, he joined Academy's 1983–84 Production Company as one of its member. He also studied acting under the guidance of Ellen Burstyn and Peter Masterson. During the early 1980s, he starred the role of Father Rangier in the school's production of The Devils.
