At Atlanta, while he was a student of theology he joined a small church in Jonesboro, Georgia Church as a pastor. In 1987 he became the pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. In 2006, he was chosen by the family of Martin Luther King Jr. to host an official funeral of Mrs. Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin. The event was attended by four President George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.
In his personal life, he has been in and out of two marriages. He married to Dabara S. Houston in 1981 as his first wedded wife but the couple separated with a divorced soon afterward. They have a son, Edward Long from their four years long married life together. Later Long married Vanessa Griffin in 1990 but as he was accused of sexually molesting young fatherless boys in the church, she filed for divorce action in December 2011.
Long died on January 15, 2017, at the age of 63. The church issued a statement describing the cause of death as an "aggressive form of cancer". The pastor had earned the big bulk of amount from his missionary and other by which his net worth turned around U.S. $ 10 Million.
