Donna was just nine years old when she became interested in politics. While she was still in her high school, she became active in TRIO Upward Bound program. After she earned her high school graduation, she joined Louisiana State University with a major in industrial psychology and she finally earned her bachelor's degree from there in 1981. Later on she established herself as a politician and was active in several advocacy groups in Washington, D.C.. She also played an important role to make Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday. She supported several Democrats like Jimmy Carter, Jesse Jackson, Walter Mondale and so on during their presidential election.
