    At the beginning of his career, Derrick joined Simone Career Academy in 2003 and became a favorite player for collegiate coaches. As a popular basketball player, he played JV basketball and freshmen for the Wolverines. While playing for his high school, he became one of the best players with a point guard average 25.2 points and guided Simeon to a 33-2 record. Following in his senior year, he also became popular as "Illinois Mr. Basketball Player."

     During his tenure for his high school, Derrick became popular and led the Memphis to win 38 matches and created the history in NCAA. He also won the Bob Cousy Award and the John R. Wooden Award. Later it was announced that he would decline his final three seasons at Memphis and declared for the 2008 NBA draft. 

    Similarly, Derrick was selected by Chicago Bulls in the 2008 draft. While playing for the Chicago Bulls, he scored average 16.8 points and 6.3 assists per game. For his outstanding performance, he became Rookie of the Year and also led the Bulls back to the playoffs during his NBA season (2009-09).     After that, Derrick started playing for the US National basketball team, which won a gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Cup. In next season, he became the NBA Most Valuable Player, which was a historic achievement for him, after Michel Jordon.

    While Derrick was 22-year-old, he was awarded the youngest player to receive the award in the history of the NBA. Over the few seasons, he performed well and he soon gained huge popularity as an all-arounder basketball player in NBA.

    In 2014, he became the member of the US National team, through which he won a gold medal at the 2014 FIBA World Cup. In June 2016, Derrick along with Justin Holiday was traded to the New York Knicks in June 2016. On July 25, 2017, Derrick made a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Later he left this team to enhance his career in the NBA.
