According to theories, the song is about the singer's lesbian experience that happened in the summer. The lyrics, which says, ' a taste of the cherry' and 'I just need to take a bite,' somehow sounds like Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl where she shared her experience of kissing a girl and loving the taste of the Cherry chapstick.
Likewise, there are many sexual references related to same-sex in the song which made fans re-think about Demi's sexuality.
When asked about the song, Demi said that she was not confirming or denying her lesbianism, but that all her songs are based on her real experiences.
During an interview with Alan Carr, Demi shared:
I'm mot confirming and I'm definitely not denying. All my songs are based off of personal experiences. I don't think there's anything wrong with experimentation at all.
During the interview with Carr, Demi also had a lot to say about why it was fine and how she found it very attractive for a man to say that he has experimented with another man.

Demi Lovato announced her breakup with her long-term boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama through a joined social media post. The pair started dating back on 5th August 2010 and decided to call it quits a year later on 3rd June 2016.
In the sentimental Instagram post, the couple wrote that they decided to end their relationship after six loving years and that, despite the split, they would still stay best friends.
But in September 2017, Demi was spotted together with DJ Lauren Abedini at Disneyland. And not just that, Demi and Lauren, who is known as a feminist and a lesbian, were spotted holding hands and looked very cozy together.

I love who I love. I just feel like everyone's always looking for a headline and they always want their magazine or TV show or whatever to be the one to break what my sexuality is. I feel like it's irrelevant to what my music is all about.
Moreover, the actress also got very frustrated with all the questions being showered on her as she tweeted that she did not owe anyone an explanation.
