Dan was raised with a strong attachment to the Catholic Church. As a child, he was to be a priest and he continued dreaming being a priest till the age of 17. He was enrolled at St. Pius X and St. Patrick's High Schools. After his high school, he joined Carleton University with a major in criminology and sociology. Later on he became the cast of this show and he became well known as a comedian and performer in the late 1970s. In 1977, he made his feature film debut by starring in a Canadian romantic comedy film Love at First Sight. He played the role of Roy in this movie. He is also well acclaimed for portraying the role of Elwood J. Blues in an American musical crime comedy film The Blues Brothers.
