Clive Standen was born Clive James Standen on July 22, 1981, in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. As a teenager, he was an international Muay Thai boxer and later became a gold medalist.

Clive completed his high school at the King Edward VII School, Melton Mowbray. He then trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

His first television role came in a British television police procedural crime drama series Waking the Dead as Martin Raynor. In 2013, he got his first break through a historical drama television series Vikings as Rollo along with Katheryn Winnick, Travis Fimmel and, Gustaf Skarsgard.

In 2017, Standen appeared in a crime drama series Taken as Bryan Mills. Moreover, he also appeared in many movies that includes Tom Brown's Schooldays, Hammer of the Gods, Everest, Patient Zero, and so on. He also played a supporting role in a Bollywood film, Namastey London, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif.

Besides, Standen has appeared in several video games that include Alien vs. Predator, Inversion, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon; Future Soldier.

Standen is a spokesman for a non-profit marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
