Chad L. Coleman is an American actor mostly known for his role in the TV shows such as The Wire (2004-2008), and The Walking Dead (2012-2015). He is currently starring in the Syfy series The Expanse as Fred Johnson.
Chad was born in Richmond, Virginia, on September 6, 1974. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University on a scholarship before dropping out of college to serve in the army. From 1995 to 1999, during his army time, he worked as a video cameraman.
Chad participated in track and field as a youth, however, his interest turned into studying drama after he suffered a leg injury. Chad starred on the HBO series The Wire as Dennis ‘Cutty’ Wise a reformed criminal.
In 2002, Coleman starred in the television movie Monday Night Mayhem as O.J. Simpson. He also had a guest role in the Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles as Queeg. Chad also made an appearance in Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power as Clyde in 2005.
Chad also voiced the coach character in Left 4 Dead 2. In 2009, Chad had a starring role in a Norwegian TV series Buzz Aldrin, What Happened to you in all the Confusion?, which aired in Europe in November 2011. He also appeared in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone a revival of August Wilson’s play.
In 2008, he appeared as a guest in the movie In Plain Sight in the episode ‘Whistle Stop’ where he portrayed a role of an ex-boxer/witness suffering from pugilistic dementia. He then participated in Lie to Me in the episode ‘The Canary’ Song’ as a coal miner.
Chad appeared in two episodes of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 2010, and in 2013. In 2011, he appeared in I Hate My Teenage Daughter and portrayed the role of Gary Miller, the ex-husband, and father of manipulative daughter Mackenzie.
From 2012 to 2015, Chad played the role of Tyreese on AMC’s horror series The Walking Dead alongside Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, and Norman Reedus. On November 20, 2014, it was confirmed that Chad will star as Fred Johnson in The Expanse.
In 2016, Chad played the role of Mingo in re-imagining of Roots where he befriends Chicken George and they both bond like father and son. Coleman is also the executive producer, as well as visual inspiration for the character Mr. Osi from the futuristic graphic novel series Treadwater.
From 2017 to present Coleman is playing the role of Klyden, on The Orville co-starring alongside Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, and J. Lee. Chad has also appeared in many movies such as The Green Hornet, Brother to Brother, and Horrible Bosses.
Chad is presumed to be living a single life currently however, he was a married man. Chad married Sally Stewart in the year 1999. The couple had two children together. In 2010, they went for divorce after eleven years of marriage.
