A car slammed into pedestrians on a street where they were had gathered for New Year's festivities in Tokyo, Japan. The tragic accident injuring eight people, authorities have confirmed.
Police have arrested a man, who reportedly is in his 20s. Authorities did not give further details about the suspect.
Authorities said he has been taken to the custody as he tried to kill people by driving the car through the street. According to local media, the car had been closed to vehicle traffic for the New Year festivities.

NHK TV footage obtained showed officers and ambulance workers rushing to the scene as a small van smashed into the crowd.
According to Kyodo News service report, a ninth person was injured, and the driver was taken into the custody on suspicion of attempted murder.
The car crash occurred on a road in Harajuku, Shibuya ward, which is known to tourists, and fashion and pop culture fans.
Every New Year's Eve, the train line that includes Harajuku station runs all night and people welcome the new year with a shrine visit.
