The mother and aunt of a missing 6-year-old boy were arrested for his murder, California authorities confirmed on Saturday, April 27.
In a news release, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said that Apple Valley Police responded to a home on Thursday, April 25, after a family member asked "for a welfare check" on the boy, Duke Flores.
The mom, Jakee Contreras, told deputies that her son hadn't "been seen for approximately two weeks," and her statement prompted authorities to scour the area.
The mom was taken into custody and booked in a detention center for child negligence "for her delay in reporting him missing."
Detectives arrived at the scene in the following day and continued to search the missing child.
The news release states,
Detectives gathered evidence and conducted multiple interviews throughout the day with family members.
She was later booked for murder. The boy's aunt, Jennifer Contreras, was arrested on the same day and booked for murder. Both of them are held without bail.
The boy was last seen in the area of Cherokee and Pawnee in Apple Valley, California.
