Avi Kaplan was born on April 17, 1989, in Visalia, California, United States. His birth name is Avriel Benjamin. He is the son of  Michael Kaplan and Shelly Kaplan.  Avi Kaplan grew up in Visalia, California along with his two siblings. 

2007

Moved to Upland, California

The bass vocalist of Pentatonix, Avi Kaplan is originally from the small town of Visalia, California, but later he moved to Upland, California, in the year 2007 to attend school at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. 

 

2008

Joined Fermata Nowhere

In the year 2008, he joined "Fermata Nowhere", a cool, high-energy, in-your-face, male a capella group of Mt. San Antonio College. In its second year, "Fermata Nowhere" won the ICCA, the first community college. In this competition, Avi Kaplan received a special award for "Best Rhythm Section".

2011

His group " Pentatonix" won The Sing-Off

The five members of Pentatonix are Scott Hoying, Kevin Olusola, Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi and Avi Kaplan.The group  " Pentatonix" won the third season of The Sing-Off on NBC in the year  2011, singing a cappella arrangement of "Eye of the Tiger."

A Pentatonix Christmas is the fifth studio album by American a cappella group Pentatonix.  A Pentatonix Christmas debuted on the Billboard 200 at number three with 52,000 albums sold in its first week, and later peaked at number one, selling 206,000.

2014

Released third album That's Christmas to Me

'That's Christmas to Me' is the third studio album by a cappella group Pentatonix. Which was released on  October 21, 2014, through RCA Records, peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

2013

Nominated for Music Award for World’s Best Album

A cappella group Pentatonix's   third extended play "PTX, Vol. II World" was nominated the Music Award for World’s Best Album. It was released digitally on November 5, 2013, while physical versions of the album were available from November 12, 2013.

At the age of 15, he learned to play the guitar by himself and later began performing at Visalia coffee houses.  He wrote his first song, “Collision";   this song holds a special place in his heart. Kaplan joined three singers from Arlington, Texas, and a YouTube musician to form Pentatonix. Pentatonix won the “Sing-Off,” the group has sold more than 80,000 albums. For winning Sing-Off on NBC the band also won $200 thousand as well as a recording contract with Sony Music.

Its first album, “PTX Vol. 1,” debuted at No. 14 on the top-200 album chart, while their Christmas CD, “PTXmas,” was in the Top 10 Debut on Billboard and iTunes Holiday charts.

On May 12, 2017, Kaplan announced he would leave the band via a YouTube video. “All of the things that we’ve accomplished, all the music that we’ve made and the people that we’ve touched with that music -- it far surpasses anything that I could have ever dreamed for my life.", he said in his video.

Regarding his nationality and ethnicity, he is a white American. Talking about his personal life he was in a relationship with Kirstie Maldonado. Currently, Kaplan is single.
