An Arizona man, namely Eldon McInville, 26, has been arrested in the accidental shooting of his daughter, 6, authorities have confirmed.
Police said that the girl got critically injured while Eldon was teaching her gun safety. The father was taken into custody and charged with "child abuse and aggravated assault."
Police officers were called to his home in Glendale on Thursday, April 25, in response to a shooting. The girl, who was shot in the abdomen, faces months of recovery.
According to KPNX-TV, court papers said, "He advised that he had the victim in his room and was teaching her gun safety."
He was reportedly cleaning the weapon and half-cocked it "so he could load birdshot ammunition into it for storage."
The court document reads,
He stated that when he loaded the weapon he was seated on the floor of the bedroom and that when he went to stand up he slipped and fell and somehow the gun went off.
According to officials, the weapon was a shotgun that Eldon had recently purchased.
Eldon told the police, who reportedly was cleaning the shotgun for the first time, had researched how to load it on Google and YouTube.
According to a Fox 10 Phoenix report, during a court appearance on Friday, April 26, the father pleaded with a judge for his release so he could help his family.
The bond was set at $50,000 in cash, however, he had not posted the bail as of Saturday.
