Ariel Helwani was born on 8th July 1982, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is currently 35 years of age. Helwani grew up in a pure Jewish family in Mount Royal, Quebec. When he was young, he attended Akiva School and he completed his high schooling at Herzliah High School. His father is from Egypt and mother is from Lebanon. In 2004, Ariel graduated from S.I Newhouse School of Public Communication, which was located in Syracuse, New York.
Helwani started his career as MMA journalist in 2006. He worked for MMAFighting.com. He also worked as an ‘MMA Insider’ for Fox Sports 1’s UFC weekly tonight show. He has worked in other pre and post-event programming as well. His career also spans in radio programs. He was the former co-host of the Sirius X radio show ‘Fight Club.' Helwani is also the interim vice president of the Mixed Martial Arts Journalists Association.
On 4th June 2016, Helwani was fired from UFC 199 with two of his other colleagues. Since then, he was banned from all UFC events for his lifetime. The reason behind this is that he reported confidential information prior to when UFC wanted that information released. The information was about the return of Brock Lesnar at UFC 200. Also, Helwani released the information without letting UFC know!
Helwani also claimed that he was not included in the Showtime broadcast team for the Conor McGregor (whose net worth is estimated to be $35 million). He said that he was removed from the four hours before the first press conference in LA. Helwani posted on Twitter the same day writing, ‘Not working for @SHOsports anymore on the May/Mac tour.' He further wrote "UFC specifically asked to have me removed. Incredibly disappointed."
Helwani currently lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife Jaclyn Stein and three other children. As of 2017, Helwani’s net worth is around $5 Million. He has also won the MMA Journalist award in 2010.
