Potts graduated from Franklin – Simpson; she received a degree in Bachelor in Fine Arts from Stephens College, Missouri. At the age of 21, Potts got caught in a fatal car accident which left every bone below her waist broken but bravely overcame the injuries and after a few years of her accident, she started working as a successful actress.
Potts made her debut on the screen in 1978 in the Metro- Goldwyn- Mayer comedy film Corvette Summer, with Mark Hamill. Anna was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1979 for a role in the film, in 1982 she won Genie Awards for Best performance by a Foreign Actress for her role in the film Heartaches where she portrayed a young woman, married to a stock car racer, carrying his friend’s child.
Potts did her role as a receptionist “Janine Melnitz” in Ghostbusters film series then achieved fame as the pragmatic interior designer’ Mary Jo Shively on the CBS television sitcom Designing Women, and did a wide variety of roles in both television and film. Potts got nominated again for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1994 for the role as Dana Palladino on Love & War.
Her other notable roles include Mary Elizabeth (O’Brien) Sims on the Lifetime Television drama series Any Day Now. She was nominated for two supporting roles for John Hughes’s Pretty in Pink as well as a guest- starring roles on such CBS’s television series Close to Order: Special Victims Unit.
