Couric's career started in 1979 when she started working at the ABC News bureau in Washington, D.C. and later joined CNN as an assignment editor.

She later returned to ABC in 2011. Katie co-anchored the coverage of the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, alongside Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, Robin Roberts, and Elizabeth Vargas, said to be the richest anchors to name some.
