So far, in his professional career, Stephens has coached two teams including Pearl River CC (2001-01) and East Mississipi CC (2008-present). Stephens has been the architect behind EMCC which won four NJCAA national championships, six MACJC State titles, eight MACJC North Division title.  

Stephens has 87.9% win ratio with EMCC as of late 2018, second is Butler Community College Head Coach, Troy Morrell. Troy has a win percentage of 87.5.

For his role as the EMCC's head coach, Stephens has been selected twice for the American Community College Football Coaches Association of the Year Award and Spalding NJCAA Coach of the Year Award.

Likewise, Stephens has gained worldwide recognization for his remarkable performance in Last Chance U. The TV show premiered on 29 July 2016.
