In 1964 she played the role of Nancy Rossman in the series Slattery’s People and also appeared in 3 episodes of the series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea where she played the role of Katie. In 1966, Flannery was cast as Dr. Laura Spencer Horton in the award-winning show Days of Our Lives. She played Dr. Laura from 1966 till 1975.  During her time in DOOL, she met writer and daytime legend William J. Bell, who later cast her in the daytime soap called The Bold And The Beautiful, in 1987. Her role in the soap made her a household name.

Flannery was also a regular director on the show who played the role of Stephanie for 25 years and decided to leave the show in 2012. In the show, Stephanie suffers from lung cancer which leads her to death.
