Erica Garner, who became an outspoken critic of police brutality following her father's death on Staten Island in 2014, has died at age 27.
Following a massive heart attack, Erica had suffered major brain damage on Christmas Eve. Her mother Esaw Snipes-Garner said that her daughter went into cardiac arrest during an asthma attack and had since been in a coma.

Esaw said that her daughter suffered her first heart attack weeks after she gave birth to a son in August. Doctors said that the pregnancy had put a strain on her heart that later found to be enlarged.
In 2014, her father, Eric Garner, who was black, was stopped on Staten Island for selling untaxed cigarettes and died after a policeman suppressed him with a chokehold. A grand jury declined to indict the officer; the city agreed to pay a $6 million civil settlement.
