A young South Carolina boy of age 8 was killed after being fatally shot during an apparent home invasion in South Carolina on Tuesday, May 14, authorities have confirmed.

The officials said that the child died after the homeowner and intruder both fired at each other with their weapons during the home invasion.

Police said in a press release that Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the 8-year-old as Mason Hanahan.

As a result of an apparent gunshot wound, the boy was pronounced dead after he arrived at a nearby hospital.

As per the report, a mask-wearing man who broke into the home in Lexington, Kentucky may also have been shot during the shooting. After the shots were fired in the home, he then drove away from the scene.

Investigators have yet to release a description of him.

Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon released a statement to say that they "are working to piece the sequence of events together."

He then added that a "name on the man who fled the scene will be the most helpful" to them to investigate the case.

Koon said,

The death of the young child during this incident is tragic and our hearts go out to his family.

The owner of the home also suffered a gunshot wound but his injuries are not life-threatening.
