At least 1 people died and 11 trapped under snow after heavy snow caused avalanches in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, authorities have confirmed.
According to top police officer S.P. Pani, rescue operations were being hampered on Friday, February 8, for people trapped.
Ten people were reported missing after a massive avalanche hit the police post near Jawahar tunnel. The missing people comprise six policemen, two fire service personnel and two prisoners. A huge rescue operation has been launched in the area. pic.twitter.com/Lp10AU2tsX

The tragic incident occurred at a fire brigade station at southern Banihal area in Kashmir. The people who were trapped under the snow were six policemen, two prisoners and two firefighters.
Avalanches and landslides are common in the mountainous area. S.P. Pani said the policemen took shelter in the station because it was never touched by avalanches in the mountainous area.
A man was killed in southern Kokernag area from an avalanche after it hit his home on Thursday, February 7. His wife, meanwhile, was still trapped under snow.
Kashmir is divided between Pakistan and India.
