James Andrew Arthur known as James Arthur is a British songwriter and a singer who is mostly recognized as the winner of ninth series of The X-Factor in 2012. Shortly after that, Arthur made his debut in the music industry with his debut single, “Impossible”, which was ranked #1 on the UK Singles Chart in its first week of release.
A native of Middleborough, England, James Arthur was born on 2nd of March 1988, to Scottish father Neil Arthur and English mother Shirley Ashworth. When Arthur turned 2 his parents divorced and each settled with new partners. At first, Arthur enrolled at Ings Farm Primary School in Redcar, North Yorkshire and later at the age of 9, he moved with his mother and step father Ronald Rafferty to Bahrain where Arthur attended the local British School of Bahrain.
Later, after his mother and step father's split, he moved back with his mother and two half-sisters Jasmine and Neva and rejoined the Redcar’s Rye Hills School. Apart from Jasmine and Neva he also has three other siblings, Neil, Sian, and Charlotte.
At the age of 15, Arthur began writing and recording songs as an unsigned artist both solo and with bands like Moonlight Drive, Cue the Drama, Save Arcade, and Emerald Skye.
Later, he auditioned for The X Factor with an acoustic rendition of judge Tulisa Contostavlos’s "Young". He was picked by his mentor Nicole Scherzinger as one of the 12 contestants for the live shows. On 9th of December 2012, Arthur won The X Factor with 53.7% of the vote, against Jahmene Douglas who received 38.9% of the vote.
Shortly after that, he came out with his debut single, “Impossible” which went on to sell over 2.5 million copies in the UK and over 2.5 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful single in the show’s history. Again his follow-up single: "You’re Nobody til Somebody Loves You” reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Till now he has released many songs including two albums “James Arthur” and “Back from the Edge”.
His hard work has paid him well with several prestigious awards including “Los Premios 40 Principales” and “NRJ Music Award” for his single “Impossible”. Apart from this, Arthur has also been nominated for BRIT Awards in British Artist Video of the Year and British Single of the Year category and “2017 Teen Choice Awards” for Choice Breakout Artist for his single “Say You Won’t Let Go”.
