Born on May 20, 1949, in Amsterdam, Chiel is one of the sons of famous Amsterdam singer Max van Praag. Chiel spent his childhood with record players and tape recorders along with his brother Marga van Praag, a TV journalist.

At the age of twenty, Chiel was asked to perform a screen test for the AVRO television program Doebidoe and in the same year, Chiel featured in Toppop's forerunner. After the television performance, the Czech national became one of the members of the music group High Tide Formation, a precursor of Kayak.
Chiel made his radio debut for NCRV with Hilversum 2 and 3. In 1977, after nearly seven years of collaboration with NCRV, he started his career as a DJ at the Veronica Drive In Show. He even worked for his father's record store.
